The New Hyundai Elantra GT Hatchback

In the United States, we tend to favor our family sedans and small crossovers. Compact, five-door cars aren’t usually seen as a top-seller here. In Europe, however, hatchbacks are the more popular choice. Hyundai, however, has faith that the hatch will bounce back, and they have a not-so-secret tool to facilitate this: the all-new 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT Hatchback.

The new Elantra Hatchback recently made its debut at the Chicago Auto Show. It has a sophisticated, Euro-inspired appearance with sleek curves and a wider, longer, and lower body. At 55 cubic-feet of interior space, the 2018 Elantra GT Hatchback offers more room than its previous generations and any of its competitors.

2018 Hyundai Elantra GT Hatchback - Nacogdoches, TXThe Elantra Hatchback will come in two different trims, the GT and the GT Sport. The GT will be equipped with a 2.0-liter engine good for 162 horsepower, while the GT Sport will have a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine that boasts 201 horsepower. This peppy acceleration is a fun type of performance often associated with hatchbacks, and one that Hyundai hopes will draw more people towards the hatch.

In fact, Hyundai is anticipating the new hatchback to make up more than 15% of Elantra sales once it hits the market. We look forward to offering this new, modern hatchback at Rex Perry Hyundai and can’t wait to test drive it ourselves!

The Hyundai Safety Cockpit Detects Road Rage to Keep You Safe

safety beltHyundai is developing technologies to help keep you safe behind the wheel, including one recent development that is designed to detect road rage. The system is a cockpit that measures the physical and mental state of drivers, helping to detect mood with face recognition, among other technologies. This could just be one of the most advanced safety systems developed to date.

According to CNBC, the Hyundai concept cockpit is designed to track a number of signs, from heat rate, posture, and breathing to facial recognition. By measuring these things, this innovative system can determine when you’re alert or angry, and it can make changes to the atmosphere of driving. This includes seat positioning, heating, lighting, temperature, volume, and even smells.

Measuring a driver’s mental state will help to keep the “optimum health and mental attitude” for safe driving, said Mike O’Brien, the VP at Hyundai, during this year’s Consumer Electronics Show.

Believe it or not, about 80% of drivers show symptoms of road rage, which can do serious damage. Driving while emotional can cause speeding, rapid acceleration, hard brakes, and more—all of which increases the risk of an accident. This new Hyundai safety cockpit could just keep you better protected than ever before.

Hyundai Hope On Wheels Donates $13 Million

Hyundai Hope On Wheels (HHOW) is working with Hyundai dealerships around the country to award 18 hospitals grants for pediatric cancer research. The Hyundai Impact Grants, each of which total $50,000, is aimed at reducing childhood cancer. Money may be used for patient assistance, teen centers and play rooms, family support, educational initiative, and efforts to improve care.

Hyundai recognizes the devastating effects of childhood cancer, not only on those diagnosed with the disease, but also for parents, friends, and family. According to Yahoo Finance, HHOW will award $13 million in pediatric cancer grants in this year alone. Originally founded in 1998, the program has funded a total of $115 million in research to the Children’s Oncology Group and member institutions.

“Our mission at Hyundai Hope On Wheels is clear: end childhood cancer,” said Scott Stark, Chairman for HHOW. “By funding transformational research through our Impact Grants and celebrating the lives of the brave young cancer fighters at our handprint ceremonies, we move closer to our dream of a day without cancer.”

The Impact Grant is given during a handprint ceremony in July and August, which means many hospitals will be receiving Hyundai’s support this month. To commemorate these events, Hyundai is having the kids dip their hands in paint and press them against a white Hyundai Tucson. This not only serves as a reminder, but it also serves as a metaphor for the ongoing relationship between the automaker and cancer research.

The interior design is just as impressive as the exterior. “The Elantra’s cabin wholly embraces the art of simplicity without feeling overly boring or stale,” said the auto writers at KBB.com. “The steering wheel offers plenty of flexibility for a variety of body types, while the driver’s seat won us over with its 8-way power adjustment, ample thigh support and, unlike the Civic or Cruze, memory settings and 2-way lumbar support.”
